An Update On Mayor Menino’s Weighty Goal

Eleven months ago, Mayor Tom Menino unveiled a city-wide health intervention called Boston Moves for Health. The idea was simple, as Menino told the press, “We’re going to connect people with resources to help them achieve a healthier weight and make Boston a million pounds lighter.”

But the goal was not — a million pounds to lose city-wide in one year’s time. And now, with that deadline creeping up on us, it’s time to find out how many pounds Boston still has to lose. (Hint: Get moving.)

The Boston Globe, “Actually, a dieter doesn’t even need to live in Boston. Barbara Ferrer, executive director of the Boston Public Health Commission, said she would take a pound of flesh from anyone who ‘works, plays, or lives’ in Boston. So, if you come into town for a Celtics game, and you’ve had the stomach flu, please log onto the city’s site and share your loss.”

CommonHealth, “Boston’s battle to lose is looking, at the moment, like a losing battle. That is to say, Mayor Thomas Menino’s one-year goal of a million collectively shed pounds by late next month is looking exceedingly distant.”

CommonHealth, “Menino pledged personally to lose at least two pounds a month for the next year. City councillor Tito Jackson one-upped the mayor and pledged to losethree pounds a month. Councillor Felix Arroyo raised the ante just a bit, saying he’d go to 3.2 pounds a month, and that he could use help with his weight loss efforts.Gentlemen, start your engines…”
